Conroe ISD officials announced July 19 they are welcoming input from the public on naming the district’s new elementary school and high school, both of which will be located in the Oak Ridge feeder zone. The elementary school is slated to open near Birnham Woods in August 2017, and the new high school will open off the Grand Parkway near Woodson’s Reserve in August 2018. “This is an exciting time for us as we look at our first new campuses with our bond issue and prepare for their opening and coming years,” said Curtis Null, CISD deputy superintendent of schools. “The first step on our side—the school’s side—is to establish a name as building is moving forward.” According to board policy, a high school can be named after a geographic area only. However, an elementary school may be named after a geographic location; a prominent person or public official who honorably served in the district or community; a person who has gained recognition in education or the arts; a national or state hero whose name would lend prestige and status to an institution of learning; or a person donating land or money to the new facility. Citizens interested in suggesting a name for the new high school or elementary school may do so by accessing www.conroeisd.net/about/school-naming-process. The board will accept name suggestions until Aug. 12, and submitted names will be shared during the Aug. 16 board meeting. Consideration for the naming of the new schools will take place Sept. 14.
