Officials with Cy-Fair ISD announced that only two of the five school calendar days that were cancelled due to severe flash floods in Cy-Fair will need to be made up at the end of the school year.
District officials said the Texas Education Agency has agreed to waive three of the five missed days. June 2 will serve as an inclement weather makeup day for students, and June 3 will serve as a professional development day for staff. Students will not have classes June 3.
“Class of 2016 graduation ceremonies will be held as originally scheduled,” Henry said in a statement posted to the district’s website.
Henry said the decision to cancel five days of school was not an easy one to make, but administrators felt it was necessary to ensure the safety of students and staff. A total of 57 campuses and support facilities sustained water infiltration.
The districts insurance plan covered the damage with a $100,000 deductible, said Roy Sprague, assistant superintendent of facilities and construction. The deductible could also potentially be reimbursed through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, he said.
“We’re hoping the repairs will come at no cost to the district,” Sprague said.
Most buildings received minor water damage around windows and doors, but Cypress Falls and Cy-Fair high schools, as well as Adam and Moore elementary schools were more heavily damaged.
A total of 20 rooms were damaged at Cy-Fair High School in addition to the library. The wooden floors in the gymnasium at Cy Falls had to be removed, as well as the school’s auditorium stage, Sprague said. They will be replaced over the summer, he said.
The artificial turf at Pridgeon Stadium, which was underwater for approximately 24 hours, is also being replaced. District officials are aiming to have the stadium ready for the first scheduled football game of the 2016 season, Sprague said.
“It [was] a stressful week for the CFISD leadership team and staff, but that pales in comparison with the burden faced by those who have lost their homes, vehicles or lives as a result of this flood,” Henry said. “Hundreds of CFISD staff members and volunteers have worked tirelessly to bring our facilities back to order and meet the needs of those who are hurting. I cannot praise [them] enough for [their] unified efforts.”
