Updated with action taken at Feb. 22 Katy ISD board of trustees meeting.

The Katy ISD board of trustees unanimously approved Feb. 22 to video record any meetings held in the district's board room. The new policy includes video taping of regular meetings, special meetings and work study sessions of the KISD board of trustees.

The decision reverses a decision the Board President Charles Griffin made in January.

Griffin made an executive decision to stop video recording the board’s work sessions after a law took effect Jan. 1 requiring Texas school districts to record only regularly scheduled meetings, not work sessions or special meetings.

Griffin made the decision without consulting other board members or announcing it publicly.

“I [stopped] the videos to give the board time to reflect on what we want to do as a board,” Griffin said. “I gave the community a chance to give input to help us with our guidance.”

Treasurer Rebecca Fox said at the Feb. 15 meeting that after Griffin’s decision, a Jan. 11 work session was not recorded. School board work sessions had previously been recorded on video.

Several board members criticized the lack of consultation on the issue during the Feb. 15 meeting.

“I must say that I was very disappointed to learn that that practice was discontinued without any input or knowledge of the board,” Fox said. “I was a bit surprised by it and disagreed with the decision.”

The board agreed at the Feb. 15 meeting to continue recording on video work-study meetings while drafting a policy about the practice. Griffin also recommended to record on video any meeting held in the KISD boardroom.
