Former board members, faculty, students and parents gathered on Dec. 2 to watch the CCS board of directors, members of the capital campaign executive planning committee and Executive Director Stephen Novotny officially break ground on the construction site. Officials with the school launched its Advancing Excellence capital campaign in fall 2014 with the goal of raising $3.3 million. This August, officials announced they had exceeded their goal by $25,000. “Everything that happens in this building—whether it be a speech competition or a basketball game—is meant to develop the character of students, to help them grow physically, to help them grow intellectually and to help them grow in their character and in their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ,” Executive Director Stephen Novotny said at the groundbreaking ceremony. Construction is projected to take anywhere from 12 to 18 months to complete, mostly dependent upon weather conditions, Novotny said. The facility will house a collegiate-sized basketball court, volleyball court, tumbling and cheer space, full-sized concessions, a retail shop, business offices and locker rooms, officials said. The space will also be used for academic and extracurricular activities, including choir performances, science fairs, art exhibits and speech competitions. The gym and life center will allow the school to double its general programing and will give students additional space to use during inclimate weather, Novotny said.
