The Fort Bend ISD board of trustees unanimously agreed Monday to name the district's 46th and 47th elementary schools after former district educators and a former FBISD student, respectively.
Madden Elementary, named after Carolyn and Vernon Madden, is scheduled to open in August in the Aliana subdivision at 17727 Abermore Lane, Richmond.
Carolyn and Vernon Madden worked in FBISD for a combined 61 years. The couple held various teaching and administrative positions throughout their careers at many schools in the district, which included Lakeview Elementary, Dulles High School, Sugar Land Middle School, Dulles Middle School and L.V. Hightower High School.
"Madden Elementary will carry on Mr. and Mrs. Madden's legacy of educational excellence," FBISD Deputy Superintendent Christie Whitbeck said.
The FBISD board also approved the naming of its 47th elementary school after Anne McCormick Sullivan, a former Dulles High School graduate and Houston Fire Department firefighter. Sullivan died May 31, 2013 alongside three other HFD firefighters while fighting a building fire.
"Ms. Sullivan's deep ties with Fort Bend ISD, her drive and determination to succeed despite her disabilities, and her bravery in the line of duty will be revered for generations to come," Whitbeck said.
Anne McCormick Sullivan Elementary is scheduled to open its doors in August 2016 in the Riverstone community at 17828 Winding Waters Lane, Sugar Land.
A district committee—comprised of teachers, a student and a community representative—was headed by Whitbeck and trustee Dave Rosenthal who submitted the selected names in an effort to honor all three FBISD icons.
"As a committee, we felt the Maddens and Ms. Sullivan exemplify selflessness and dedication, and we proudly submitted these namesakes for board consideration," Whitbeck said.
