Free meals will be provided to children in Cy-Fair ISD schools this summer. The district is offering breakfasts and lunches to children 18 years or younger with no hassle and no cost.

The meals are funded through the Seamless Summer Option, an initiative by the United States Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service that aims to help school districts around the country feed economically disadvantaged students during the summer.

"The big purpose of the program is to make it easier for children who get most of their nutrition from schools during the year, to try and cover that break," said Darin Crawford, CFISD's food service department director.

The cost of meals is subsidized by the federal government. The paper trail from the previously-used Summer Food Service Program was an "administrative nightmare," Crawford said, but the SSO streamlines the reimbursement cost and helps school districts like CFISD provide free lunches to children in the community.

Slightly more than 50 percent of CFISD students are considered economically disadvantaged. Since the program looks at need-based communities, proof of identification or hardship is not required.

"It makes it easier to run, because students don't have to punch in their PIN number, and they don't have to pay," Crawford said. "They basically come and get their meal, and their meal is free."

The program is entering its third year in CFISD, although the school district did have a summer meal plan before SSO's inaugural implementation in 2011. Families of children utilizing the program can also able to receive affordable meals at $3 for lunch and $1.50 for breakfast.

"It's very gratifying when you go and visit a campus and you'll see families there," Crawford said. "You know that everyday they're coming there to get a meal and that in some of those areas, it may be their only option to come in there and get a meal and you're providing a service for them."

Crawford said the meals offered are the same quality as those provided during the school year and vary in choices based on whether the campus is an elementary, middle or high school. The meals also adhere to health standards and regulations.

The program is available at 23 of the district's campuses. Some campuses are also hosting summer classes while others are open exclusively for SSO. Meals are offered Monday through Thursday at the following CFISD campuses:
