Owners Elena and Adam Nunez have prepared traditional Mexican cuisine for Conroe residents for 12 years at Margarita & Peppers Mexican Grill and Bar.

The couple opened the restaurant after Adam suffered an injury working as a truck driver, rendering him unable to work in the industry.

Elena Nunez said opening the business was daunting, but she was able to draw on experience she gained working at another restaurant to launch the business.

“I didn’t know anything else at the time, so I suggested we open a restaurant,” Nunez said. “It was exciting. We had the opportunity to live the American dream, and we are thankful that by working hard and trying our best everything came together.”

The restaurant serves traditional Mexican food, such as fajitas, crispy tacos, burritos and enchiladas. Nunez said she is proud the food at the restaurant is prepared without lard.

“We try to be as healthy as possible,” she said. “We are raising a family, too, and want to do what we think is best.”

The restaurant’s fajita plate is the most popular dish, and Nunez said the restaurant adds flavor by marinating the meat. Served with sauteed onions and bell peppers, the plate also includes a choice of refried or charro beans, rice, guacamole and tortillas.

Nunez said the Katy’s plate, which includes two cheese enchiladas covered with cheese and beef fajitas is another frequently requested meal.

The restaurant also offers meals not listed on its menu, such as brisket enchiladas, tacos al pastor or carnita plates.

True to its namesake, the restaurant offers a full bar that serves an assortment of margaritas on the rocks or frozen as well as daiquiris, cocktails, beer and wine.

“We wanted to give people the option to have good food and a good drink together,” Nunez said. “We understand people have stressful lives, but when they get here we want to give them attention and good service. When they leave happy, we are happy.”

The restaurant also offers catering services for groups of any size, she said. Although Nunez said she does not have plans to further expand the business, the restaurant has thrived as a result of growing customer support.

“We have so many customers that come eat every day or multiple times a week,” Nunez said. “We know what they like. We’ve seen their kids grow.”
