"We're more of a restaurant that centers on bringing families back around the dinner table," Friels said.
Having grown since the restaurant opened, Uncle Wankie's Restaurant is already undergoing an expansion, constructing a game room that should be completed by early January, the owner said.
The restaurant has embraced the community by starting the Kudos Kiddo program, which allows kids to bring in a certificate and redeem it for a free meal. Friels said the restaurant also supports nearby schools, including Klein Collins softball and Future Farmers of America.
Friels said the most satisfying aspect of having a business popular with the community is when he hears it mentioned when he is out in public.
"The biggest challenge has been driving people towards us," he said, "We're not at the main intersection. We are located east of the intersection. The challenge is driving people here, letting them know we're not a bar. We're a restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner."
Popular items include breakfast chicken-fried steak and homemade onion rings.
