Owner Mark Martinez said the dance hall will be relocated to 16614 Spring Cypress Road in Cypress. The exact location is across from a U.S. post office between Barker Cypress and Skinner roads.
There were three main things Martinez said he was looking for in a new location, all of which were satisfied—the property had to be in Cypress, it had to have a similar feel to the old environment with old oak trees and woodsy surroundings and it had to have good visibility from the road.
Martinez said he thinks poor visibility was hurting business at the former location at 14800 Tin Hall Road, citing the 2006 Harris County realignment of Huffmeister and Telge roads as a turning point.
“When that happened, they kind of put us on an island with no visibility,” Martinez said. “I think that really hurt us. Now we’ll be able to have our sign out on the main road again.”
The idea of moving an entire 24,000-square-foot facility seems confusing to a lot of people, Martinez said. However, with help from the same structural relocation company that moved Juergen Hall in 2005, there should not be an issue, he said.
“It is financially and structurally possible for us to move Tin Hall by breaking it down into five different pieces and reassembling it,” Martinez said.
The relocation process will take several months and cost around $300,000, Martinez said. He is targeting late May for Tin Hall's grand reopening. Martinez also said he would reopen up membership opportunities with various benefits that will be announced, returning to Tin Hall to its social club roots.
Tin Hall closed at its former location on Jan. 1. It served as a dance hall in the Cypress community since 1890.
In advance of the relocation, Martinez is auctioning off some furniture, fixtures and equipment from the current location at a Jan. 29 auction. Select antiques, neon signs, bar stools and glassware will be auctioned off, among other items.
Although some items are being auctioned off and some new furniture and fixtures will be brought in, Martinez said the character of Tin Hall will be preserved. No structural elements of the building will be auctioned off, nor will any intellectual property related to Tin Hall. Martinez said he will also hold on to a handful of pieces to keep the history of the dance hall alive at the new location, including the bars, the main Tin Hall sign, the original Gun and Rifle Club sign, a framed photo taken in 1905 and a photo taken at the 50th anniversary.
“The auction allows us to share a little piece of history with the community, and it also helps us raise some funds to take care of the initial cost of the relocation,” he said.
The auction will take place at noon at Tin Hall, 14800 Tin Hall Road, Cypress. Individuals can call 713-715-9544 for more information.
