In Lone Star College System's board of trustees District 1 race, Michael Stoma has taken a 55.6 percent lead over his opponent George Edwards with 69 of 80 precincts reporting.

Stoma said Tuesday night the college system’s administration focuses heavily on academics, but he would like to see more community outreach in the future.

“I certainly will question the [system] on its decision to have 2,800 employees and only about 30 percent are instructors,” he said Tuesday night. “I believe more [focus] should go to instruction and community outreach programs—not only to talk to students but to parents too.”

In District 2, Ernestine M. Pierce appears to be heading toward victory with 60 percent of the vote over opponent Matthew Wheeler with 96 of 107 precincts reporting.

Pierce said Tuesday night she is excited to be elected to the board and plans to focus on workforce programming, including non-degree programs and working with local businesses to better meet workforce needs.

“I am looking forward to basically improving the workforce programs and making tuition more affordable for all students,” she said.

Mike Sullivan took an early lead over Guillermo Puente with 83.2 percent of the vote compared to Puente's 16.8 percent in District 8. Sullivan could not be reached for comment Tuesday night.
