The YMCA of Greater Houston has launched its 17th annual YMCA Operation Backpack program to prepare students for the 2021-22 school year, according to a July 7 news release. Monetary donations, which will be used to purchase packaged school supplies and backpacks, will be accepted through Aug. 6. All proceeds will support students in need in the Greater Houston area.
The organization has set a goal to help 30,000 Greater Houston-area youth. In Houston alone, 28.8% of children under age 17 are living in poverty and do not have adequate funds for backpacks or school supplies, according to the release.
“As students return to in-person classes, having the tools necessary to excel is extremely important for both learning and confidence,” the release stated.
