Officials with the Harris County Department of Education will gather for a groundbreaking ceremony April 3 at the new Academic and Behavior School West site, 12772 Medfield Drive, Houston. The facility will be relocated from 7800 Westglen Drive, Houston, to the 47,970-square-foot facility in southwest Houston, according to a press release.
The new campus will feature 28 classrooms, a gated outdoor walking trail, a courtyard with an outdoor basketball court, a domestic lab for life skills students and a strict security system, officials said.
The school originally opened in 1998 to serve students across the Greater Houston area with intellectual or developmental disabilities and challenging behaviors. In 2017-18, the school served 180 students from 17 area districts.
School districts can contract with HCDE to provide student services at the west or east Houston campus. State-aligned curriculum teaching life skills and behavior management meets students’ needs through small class sizes, according to HCDE.
