After months of work and renovation, local nonprofit
The Living Legacy Center is moving into its new office at 12527 Cypress North Houston Road, Cypress, this Saturday.
The center—founded in 2015 by Elizabeth Hilbun, a local attorney with The Hilbun Law Firm—seeks to offer resources and assistance to senior citizens, veterans and individuals with special needs at no cost. Common issues the nonprofit helps with include e
state planning, veterans benefits, medicaid planning and life care planning.
The new office, space that was formerly occupied by the Hilbun Law Firm and renovated this summer, marks a major milestone in the evolution of the Living Legacy Center, co-founder Teresa Trull said. The nonprofit formerly functioned mainly online through its website at
www.livinglegacycenter.com.
"We’re really thankful to be able to actually have a brick-and-mortar office so all our partners have a place to go and meet with the people who come to us for help," Trull said. "They're not just dealing with a website; they’re going to be dealing with live people. It’s one more step forward."
Through the end of this year, the nonprofit will continue to operate on an appointment-only basis. However, Trull said they hope to start taking walk-ins on Jan. 1 once the new office is fully staffed.
Trull said the nonprofit is looking for partners in all areas, including attorneys and case workers—people who meet with potential clients, go over their lives and find out what kinds of assistance they need.
"They come in and may need help with a [homeowners association], with cleaning up their yard or someone to just come over and walk their pet," Trull said. "We can also help get them to the right place if they have greater needs, so they aren't just being shuffled around by different organizations."
The brick-and-mortar location marks Phase 2 of the nonprofit's long-term plan, with Phase 1 being the launch of the website. Once the new center is open and running smoothly, Trull said they will move on to Phase 3, which involves duplicating the service in other areas.
"We might start in other areas of town here, but the goal is to eventually be in other towns and other states so everyone that is in need can get the help they need," she said.
The grand opening event is set to take place this
Saturday, Aug. 19, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Guests can see the new space and meet staff as well as purchase raffle tickets to win gift baskets. Barbecue plates will be sold for $10 each with proceeds benefitting the center. Guests can also purchase tickets to a gala taking place next May, which serves as the center's main fundraiser each year.
