Updated 9:30 p.m. Sept. 1
As of Thursday evening, Texas Department of Transportation officials have rescheduled the opening of the new Hwy. 290 eastbound frontage road between Hwy. 6 and North Eldridge Parkway for the morning of Sept. 7. The switch was originally set for the morning of Sept. 2 but was rescheduled due to high traffic counts anticipated for Labor Day weekend.
Once the new frontage road opens, the eastbound entrance ramp from Hwy. 6 will be pushed farther east to just before North Eldridge Parkway. Beginning at 5 a.m. Sept. 7, drivers entering the freeway at this location will no longer be able to access the HOV lane.
Instead, drivers should enter from the Northwest Park & Ride at West Road or enter the freeway from Huffmeister Road. Drivers can then access the HOV before North Eldridge Parkway.
When the switch takes place the exit to North Eldridge Parkway will also be moved west, just past Hwy. 6.
Construction along Hwy. 290 will pause over Labor Day weekend, keeping more lanes open to accommodate an increase in traffic.
