U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt, R-Houston, outlined his legislative priorities during a community event at Sam Houston Race Park on Feb. 19, focusing on border security, energy policy, fiscal responsibility and flood mitigation.

Hunt also addressed constituent concerns, including small-business support.

The details

Hunt shared his commitment to securing the U.S.-Mexico border, supporting President Donald Trump’s recent executive actions. He said that stopping illegal immigration and fentanyl trafficking remains a top priority.

On energy, Hunt emphasized the need for U.S. energy independence. He also discussed flood prevention efforts, including a conversation he had with Elon Musk about potential infrastructure projects.

“I talked to him about Hurricane Harvey and how we need tunnels,” Hunt said. “He told me, ‘I can do that at a fraction of the cost the Army Corps of Engineers would do it.’”

Hunt said while he can’t promise anything, he is working with Harris County officials on solutions, stating he has met with commissioners Lesley Briones and Tom Ramsey.

With a narrow Republican majority in Congress, Hunt said he believes there are legislative hurdles for the party.

“It’s very difficult to get things done, so we’re focusing on high-level issues like the border and energy policy that our entire delegation can agree on,” Hunt said. “Our national debt is $36 trillion, and we’re running a $2 trillion annual deficit. [We need] stricter oversight and spending cuts.”

Also of note

Attendees raised concerns about cybersecurity, disaster relief for small businesses and school funding.

One business owner emphasized the importance of continued support from the Small Business Administration, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Flood Insurance Program.

Hunt assured the audience he would advocate for reauthorizing these programs to help protect Houston-area businesses and homeowners.
