At a Sept. 16 meeting, the North Harris County Regional Water Authority voted to reduce surface water rates and groundwater pumpage fees, according to a Sept. 18 news release. This is the board’s third rate reduction since 2023.

In a nutshell

The board voted to reduce surface water rates to $3.05 per 1,000 gallons from $4.05 and groundwater pumpage fees to $2.60 per 1,000 gallons from $3.60, according to the news release. The rate cuts will go into effect Oct.1.

Notable quotes

The reduced rates are continued efforts by the board to provide relief to the taxpayers in the area, board president and director Melissa Rowell said via news release.

“This continued effort reflects our commitment to providing value and relief to our ratepayers,” Rowell said.

In addition to the recent reduction, the board will continue to work toward other long-term solutions for North Harris County residents and businesses and advocate for lower rates, director Mark Ramsey said via news release.

“I am grateful for the hard work of the board and the staff in identifying ways to reduce water rates,” Ramsey said. “We continue to provide abundant high-quality surface water complementing the even more abundant high-quality groundwater beneath our feet.”

How we got here

The board voted to reduce water rates twice by $0.50 in 2023. Prior to these reductions, the fees had increased, Community Impact reported previously.
