Cy-Fair ISD student Jake Johnson launched his own homemade salsa enterprise two years ago as an elementary school student. Now a seventh-grader at Salyards Middle School, Johnson continues to grow his business with nearly 100 regular customers. Johnson worked with his stepdad to curate his signature recipe—a citrusy salsa without cilantro or too much onion. “After we perfected the recipe, I just wanted to share it with everyone,” he said. “I thought it was so good so I started taking it to school with me.” As the demand for Jake’s Atomic Salsa grew, he started selling it for $5 per pint-sized jar. He spends time on the weekends shopping for ingredients, grilling peppers and canning salsa. With hopes of pursuing a degree in geology at Texas A&M University, Johnson said all profits from the project go directly into his college fund. “I want to be a geologist so I know I will be at A&M for a while, and I’m ready to get started on that,” he said. “I have my own savings account, and I appreciate all my customers that have contributed to it.” The signature recipe comes in four varieties, ranging from mild to atomic heat, with names inspired by geology: Molecular, Fore-shock, Aftershock and Radioactive.
