Some Cy-Fair ISD high school athletic teams will change competition districts as a result of the University Interscholastic League’s biennial reclassification and realignment for 2024-25 and 2025-26 school years.

The UIL—which oversees athletic, music and academic contests within the Texas public school system—announced Feb. 1 the realignment for the high school football and basketball programs, which affects some CFISD schools, according to a district news release.

The details

Due to the realignment, Region 3 District 17-6A will now include the following schools:
  • Cy-Fair
  • Cypress Creek
  • Cypress Falls
  • Cypress Ridge
  • Cypress Falls (moving from Region 2)
  • Houston Memorial (Spring Branch ISD)
  • Houston Northbrook (Spring Branch ISD)
  • Houston Stratford (Spring Branch ISD)
  • Jersey Village
District 17-6A will have playoff matchups against District 18-6A, which is made up of opponents coming from Houston ISD schools Bellaire, Chavez, Heights, Lamar, Math and Science Technical, Westside and Wisdom, according to the release.

Likewise, due to the realignment, Region 2 District 16-6A will now include the following schools:
  • Bridgeland
  • Cypress Lakes
  • Cypress Park
  • Cypress Ranch
  • Cypress Springs
  • Cypress Woods
  • Langham Creek
  • Waller (Waller ISD)
District 16-6A will also compete in playoff action with Houston-area schools against District 15-6A, which includes Klein, Klein Cain, Klein Collins, Klein Forest, Klein Oak, Magnolia, Magnolia West, Tomball and Tomball Memorial.

The backstory

The opening of Cypress Park and Bridgeland high schools in 2016-17 increased the number of CFISD high schools to 12, which led to the school district splitting into separate leagues during the 2018 reclassification and realignment, according to the release.

Before the split, CFISD was its own self-contained league from 2008-18. Prior to 2008, CFISD schools were matched up against Bryan and A&M Consolidated in 2002-04, Tomball and Magnolia in 2004-06 and Houston Strake Jesuit in 2006-08.
