Cy-Fair ISD students failed to meet the district's 2021 academic targets set prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to data presented by Ashley Clayburn, assistant superintendent of district improvement and accountability, at the May 5 board work session.

The benchmarks students were aiming for were based on previous scores collected during a time without remote learning and other pandemic-related hurdles, officials said. Prepandemic scores for CFISD students were reportedly high, making it harder for students to reach these same goals after two years of alternative or remote learning, Clayburn said. High school students were gauged on the state's college, career and military readiness standards, which all students evaluated missed, according to the district. Officials said this metric was influenced by the adverse conditions faced during the pandemic and prepandemic scores setting standards high.

Despite missing the district's targets, officials clarified CFISD still outperformed the state based on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness. Clayburn confirmed the rate at which the district outperformed the state increased.

“When we look at just our overall, general STAAR data, we definitely outperformed the state in student performance at the 'Meets' level overall in every single content area,” she said.
