The Prep Student Athlete Training Academy will launch Sept. 1 at the Louetta Automotive Sports Complex, 17120 House & Hahl Road, Cypress, according to CEO and Founder Andrew Green. The academy educates student-athletes and helps prepare them for their post-graduate careers.
Green said he is expecting an enrollment of 75-100 students for the upcoming school year, and they will take students starting in third grade. He said he started the school so students can focus on their sport and classroom studies simultaneously.
The school will be set up similar to a college setting, he said. Students will be in class for a few hours either virtually or in-person starting at 8 a.m., train and practice in the middle of the day, and finish the day with classes and tutoring from around 4-6 p.m., he said. Classes will be held at the Soren Building next to the complex.
Sports offered at PSAT include basketball, baseball, softball, soccer, football and volleyball for both boys and girls. He said they may also add a golf team in the future. Students will have the opportunity to train under former professional athletes, such as former Astros manager Bo Porter, alongside two former NBA and NFL players.
When it comes to academics, students will be required to take two classes of Python, a high-level programming course. Additionally, students will be able to receive a Geographic Information Systems certification before they graduate high school.
Green said classes in front-end development and coding will be offered for students to be able to think logistically and problem solve.
“I don’t want anybody thinking that athletes are just dumb,” he said. “I want a different type of student leaving our school heading to college.”
