As the owners of Nyam Nyam Cafe in Cypress, Mikhail and Nataliya Goryachev said they are eager to share a little piece of their Eastern European culture with local diners.

Open since August 2015, the eatery features a variety of menu items from the couple’s home countries—Russia and Ukraine—including pirozhki, a Russian-style kolache, and crepes of both savory and sweet varieties.

“There is nobody in town who does what we do,” Mikhail said.

The Goryachevs said over the past year, they have continuously worked to expand customer appreciation of their home countries by experimenting with menu items to provide something new and exciting.

Mikhail said they often test different dishes by offering samples to diners to get their opinions and feedback.

“All of our customers always give [an] honest opinion,” Mikhail said. “They tell us if this [dish] is missing something, if we should add something in.”

Baking has become one of the Goryachevs’ most successful experiments, Mikhail said. In particular, the Nutella croissant was met with much acclaim from diners after a collaborative discussion with a customer, he said.

This kind of experimentation, paired with family recipes often procured over Skype from Nataliya’s mother, allows the Goryachevs to please their customers, Nataliya said.

“At home, restaurants are just for night,” she said. “No one goes to restaurants every day to eat; everyone cooks at home. Each family has different recipes, and they share them. Our idea is to share those recipes here.”

And share they have. The shop attracts customers from as far as Pearland, Waller and even Dallas.

Mikhail said after new customers try the restaurant for the first time, they keep returning to try all the new dishes.

“When you see a clean plate, that is the biggest compliment,” Mikhail said.
