Costco, a membership-only warehouse-retail store, opened Aug. 16 in Tomball at the intersection of Hwy. 249 and Holderrieth Road. It’s the first Costco in the city and the 40th in Texas, according to a July 16 news release.

Diving in deeper

The 152,000-square-foot store includes a gas station and departments such as:
  • A bakery
  • An optical department
  • A tire center
  • A hearing center
  • A food court
“It’s been a long time coming,” store Manager Jeremiah Sorensen said at the opening.

How we got here

Costco filed its permit for the Tomball location in September 2022, according to prior reporting. In November 2022, Tomball City Council approved $6 million in economic incentives to offset infrastructure costs.

“It’s a huge symbol of growth, of prosperity, of investment,” said Kelly Violette, executive director of the Tomball Economic Development Corp., at the ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 16. “To see this come to fruition is just super exciting.”

What they’re saying

Hundreds of people lined up outside the grocery store to attend the store’s ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 16 and to celebrate what Bruce Hillegeist, Greater Tomball Area Chamber of Commerce CEO, called “a milestone” in the city’s growth. “We just continue to grow more and more and more,” Hillegeist said. “It never gets less exciting.”
