The Greater Houston area continues to see new coronavirus cases confirmed daily, including 210 new cases April 20.

However, the rate of new confirmed coronavirus cases appears to be slowing in the Greater Houston area's nine counties. An analysis of how many new cases have been confirmed each week since the start of March shows fewer new cases the week of April 12 compared to the week of April 5 despite increased testing. A total of 2,949 new cases were confirmed the week of April 5 compared to 1,658 new cases confirmed the week of April 12, which ended April 18.

Each county saw a slowdown in the rate of new cases except for Montgomery County, which saw 94 new cases the week of April 5 and 141 new cases the week of April 12. The drop-off in new cases was most steep in Harris County, which saw 2,349 new cases confirmed the week of April 5 and 1,092 new cases confirmed the week of April 12.

Harris County officials have previously said tests can take three to five days to process, so some confirmed cases in one week could be tied to tests given in the previous week.

Active cases, the number of coronavirus cases after removing recoveries and deaths, increased as well from April 19-20. Active cases in the Greater Houston area's five largest counties—Harris, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Galveston and Brazoria—increased by 114 on April 20 to a total of 5,123. Recoveries increased by 86, and deaths increased by four.
