Kumon Math and Reading Center of The Woodlands West will mark 15 years in business this fall, offering an after-school program for students age 3 and older in math and reading.
Owners Luis Contreras and Birgit Hess said the program helps students build a strong foundation in math and reading as well as to develop work skills like discipline and self-esteem. Originally from the hospitality industry, the owners said they became involved after seeing their own child face challenges with reading and becoming Kumon instructors themselves.
The center will mark 15 years on Oct. 17.
About the program
The program is year-round, and students attend twice weekly while completing daily homework. The facility now has a capacity for about 600 students age 3 and older, with about 440 students currently enrolled. In addition to academic work, students learn about the importance of having a routine and the discipline of daily work, the owners said.
"When you do understand reading and comprehension, then history, biology, everything—math problem, word problems—become a lot easier because you understand what you're reading," Hess said.
Hess said the center grew after COVID-19 emerged, as many students needed additional academic support during that time.
The center also offers Kumon Connect, allowing students to complete homework with a tablet.
