The Cypress Fairbanks Medical Center Hospital’s trauma staff is teaming up with Texas Children’s Hospital researcher Nancy Correa this Thursday to teach health care professionals and the community how to deal with domestic violence—an issue that increases around the holidays, officials said.

A workshop on intimate partner violence is scheduled Thursday, Dec. 7, at 9 a.m. at Cy-Fair Hospital, 10655 Steepletop Drive, Houston. Health care personnel, EMS professionals and community members are invited to attend the free session.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institute of Justice, nearly 25 percent of women experience at least one physical assault during adulthood by a partner.

"Domestic violence cases can be hard to identify and even harder to get patients the help they need,” Trauma Program Manager Suzanne Curran said. "Our goal is to be a support system for victims and equip our staff with the knowledge and tools to help anyone who may be in a bad situation."

Correa will focus on equipping health care professionals with the tools to meet the needs of patients, friends or family members going through intimate partner violence.
