After working as a manicurist for 25 years, Tammy Truong pursued a lifelong dream and opened her own bakery in 2016. She said she is able to combine two of her passions—baking and Vietnamese cuisine—at Cakes N’ Mor.

“There were many times my mother struggled to make ends meet or put food on the table for me and my seven siblings,” she said of her time growing up in Vietnam. “We made the most with the food that was available to us, but I savored every chance I got to enjoy the street food from Vietnam.”

The shop offers custom cakes, cupcakes, cake balls, pastries, cookies, Vietnamese sandwiches and Vietnamese-inspired coffees and teas.

Many of the recipes have been passed down throughout Truong’s family, and the menu also features her children’s favorite treats: Napoleons and butter almond cookies.

“I would not be able to achieve anything without the help of my family,” she said. “They help me with everything I need at the shop and are always big supporters of my dreams.”

Cakes N’ Mor’s location brings in students from Cypress Creek High School and families from surrounding neighborhoods, and Truong said interacting with customers is her favorite part of the job. The staff can customize nearly anything on the menu to the customer’s liking for the best experience possible, she said.

“We are just a small business doing what we love, and if we could bring just a little bit of joy to one person with something as small as a cupcake, it would all be worth it to me,” Truong said.
