In their eight years in business, the owners of Cake. Fine Pastry in Cy-Fair have transitioned from working from home to running a food truck to opening a storefront, all the while creating more than 1,000 custom cakes, no two of which are the same.

Owned by Liz and Jerry Hale, the business was initially launched as Zeapod Cakery in 2010. In 2017 the Hales decided to rebrand as Cake. Fine Pastry, Jerry said.

“Our primary product is custom cakes; we turn cakes into anything you can imagine,” he said. “Everyone knows cakes. The world knows cake, but not the way we do it.”

The husband and wife duo have been making cakes from their storefront on FM 529 since 2015, Liz said, where they produce anywhere from 25-30 custom cakes per week. Cakes are available for any occasion, including birthdays, weddings and graduations, she said.

Aside from a few decorators who work part-time, Liz said the business is run entirely by the Hales, including their son, Alec, and daughter, Vivian, who help out when they are not attending classes at Langham Creek High School.

The task of designing the custom cakes comes down to Liz, who said she has created all kinds of different cake concepts, including cakes that look like cars, dinosaurs and dragons.

“They are all pretty across-the-board complex,” she said. “The ones where you have to make it look like someone’s face are more difficult. Making a cake that looks like Mick Jagger involves a lot of sculpting.”

The process of making a custom cake  can take 5-7 hours, but Liz said her most complex job—a cake featuring precisely sculpted characters from the TV show “Adventure Time”—took four days to complete. The shop also sells pies for the holiday season as well as cookies, cake pops and cupcake jars.

The Hales said they are looking to open a second location, which could either be in Cypress or in the Heights. In the meantime, Liz said she will continue doing everything she can to make sure their cakes go beyond her customers’ expectations.

“It’s really gratifying seeing people be happy about their cakes,” Liz said. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything.”
