Murdoch’s Backyard, a Cypress-based restaurant known for its burgers and scratch-made dishes that first opened in 2016, closed its doors in late March at 18541 Mueschke Road, Cypress.

The eatery will soon reopen as a new farm-to-table concept called Murdoch’s Artisan Market Bistro. Officials said they plan to open April 19 from noon-6 p.m. as the new concept continues to be rolled out.

"Murdoch’s thanks our awesome customers for seven great years of business. We also love, thank and appreciate all the staff who’ve been part of making Murdoch’s what it was. We are looking forward to our future as Murdoch’s Artisan Market Bistro,” owner Gwen Franke said.

The new incarnation of the restaurant will include a local artisan market, including in-house condiments and home-baked breads, cakes, cheesecakes and cookies, among other items. It will also carry fresh eggs, produce and honey from its gardens and beehives, Franke said.

The lunchtime offering will be served inside, on its patio and available for takeout as well; however, it will no longer offer a children’s menu for lunch or dinner.

In the evening, the focus will shift toward a more upscale environment in their outdoor space, ideal for date nights for local patrons on a reservations-only basis, Franke said.

Franke said it will continue to offer wine but will trim its craft beer menu to be more compatible with the new approach, and private events will also be a big part of Murdoch’s future.

“We have a beautiful ‘Wedding Tree’ in our backyard that’s a fantastic setting for many happy celebrations, especially at sunset. We can host weddings, business meetings, game nights, Christmas parties, anniversary celebrations and any other good-sized gatherings,” she said.
