In March, the Assistance League of Montgomery County—a nonprofit serving county residents in need—will celebrate 40 years since its founding, according to a news release from the organization.

In 1985, a group of women living in the Lake Conroe area initially established the Auxiliary of Assistance League of Houston with 41 founding members, according to the release. The organization has since grown and evolved into the Assistance League of Montgomery County, which today is run by more than 200 volunteers.

The nonprofit operates a thrift store at 126 N. San Jacinto St. in Conroe that serves as the nonprofit’s main source of revenue, according to the release. The organization’s programs include:
  • Operation School Bell, which provides economically disadvantaged children with materials such as school clothes and books
  • Assault Survivor Kits, which gifts clothing, toiletries and comfort items for assault and trauma survivors
  • Fans for Friends, which is provides box fans during the summer and blankets during the winter to residents in need
  • A scholarship program for individuals to advance their education—including young students hoping to attend college and adults returning to school—or for people experiencing mental or physical challenges who need therapy
Assistance League of Montgomery County is the local chapter of a national organization, according to the nonprofit’s website.
