Montgomery County Food Bank, a nonprofit based in Conroe that gave out 9 million meals in 2024, is celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2025, according to a Jan. 7 news release.

The details

Founded in 1985 by Betty Hardy, the food bank began with Hardy distributing food from the trunk of her car, according to the release.

Montgomery County Food Bank is currently undertaking an 18,100-square-foot expansion project set to be completed this spring, Community Impact previously reported.

The project will help provide for one million more meals annually, as well as:
  • Add 3,000 square feet to the produce rescue center
  • Increase freezer and refrigerated storage space by 43%
  • Add over 5,000 square feet of food sorting workspace and storage
  • Double as an event space which allows for groups of 80-plus people
Also of note

MCFB President Kristine Marlowe said in November the demand for food assistance in the area is at an all-time high due to the rapid growth of Montgomery County, Community Impact previously reported.

Quote of note

“Over the last 40 years, we’ve come a long way in the fight against hunger but there is still important work to be done,” Marlowe said in the news release.
