An expansion and renovation project of the Montgomery County Food Bank, set to complete in the spring, will provide 1 million more meals each year while demand for food assistance is at a record high, President and CEO Kristine Marlow said.

The details

The project features renovations and an 18,100-square-foot expansion on the facility, located at 1 Food For Life Way in Conroe, according to the food bank website.

The project will:
  • Add 3,000 square feet to the produce rescue center
  • Increase freezer and refrigerated storage space by 43%
  • Add over 5,000 square feet of food sorting workspace and storage
  • Double as an event space which allows for groups of 80+ people
Also of note

The $6.5 million, donation-funded project, which has received roughly 80% of its funding from the food bank’s "Build Today, Feed Tomorrow" campaign, will help more people in need of food assistance in a growing county, Marlow said.

Marlow said the growth of Montgomery County, which was named one of the 10 fastest growing counties by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2023, has contributed to the growing need for food assistance.

“Our little place in Texas ain't so little. With that comes need, and so when you're experiencing growth, you're experiencing need,” Marlow said.

Marlow said the food bank served an average of 80,000 people monthly in 2023, a 15% increase in people served since 2022.

Quote of note

“[Montgomery County has] been through disasters together, but we come together because we believe in the basic tenet of dignity in our service, and that every person deserves to have food, water and shelter,” Marlow said.
