Representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration, Federal Emergency Management Agency and Lone Star College Business Development Center gathered at the Conroe/Lake Conroe Chamber of Commerce Friday morning to offer tips for business owners affected by Hurricane Harvey.
According to FEMA news release, the agency has received 792,476 individual assistance applications and 42,384 SBA loan applications as of Sept. 21. More than $571.8 million in grants and more than $367.2 million in low-interest, long-term disaster loans have been approved by the agency.
Here are some takeaways from the meeting:
A Disaster Recovery Center opened in Conroe on Thursday at the former Conroe Police Department building, located at 700 Old Montgomery Road. The center offers face-to-face assistance from FEMA representatives and other agencies for residents affected by the storm. The center will be open 7 a.m.-7 p.m. seven days a week until further notice to assist people applying for federal funding.
FEMA agents will be in the community offering registration assistance, said Karyn Wolfe, FEMA disaster survivor assistance taskforce lead. Wolfe said FEMA representatives will be walking door-to-door offering assistance to residents and business owners. Disaster Survivor Assistance team members can take new FEMA registrations, deliver case updates and answer case status inquiries.
People approved for the Individuals and Households Program are eligible to receive a maximum of $33,300 in grant assistance, FEMA IA Liaison Sonny Motley said. The grants can be used for essential housing, home repairs and rental assistance needs. Individuals are eligible to be approved for a grant if they are uninsured or underinsured. Residents can register for FEMA by calling 1-800-621-3362 or visiting
www.disasterassistance.gov or by visiting a DRC.
Flood insurance applications are not retroactive, said Chris Parsons, FEMA flood plain management and insurance specialist. Parsons said FEMA will reach out to local insurance agents to educate them on flood insurance programs. To find a local agent, call 1-800-638-6620.
SBA offers loans to homeowners, renters, businesses of all sizes and nonprofit organizations, SBA Public Information Officer Donald Fikes said. Business loans of up to $2 million are available, with 3.3 percent interest for up to a 30-year term. Fikes said the loans can cover physical damages and economic damages, and SBA will ask for standard loan documents like tax returns and financial statements. People can apply online at
