Montgomery County commissioners voted on Sept. 6 to approve the fiscal year 2024-25 budget and the tax rate, which saw an 8.9% increase from the previous fiscal year.

Following a full week of budget workshops in August, commissioners approved the FY 2024-25 budget of $466.02 million in a 3-1 vote on Sept. 6. Precinct 4 Commissioner Matt Gray voted against the adoption of the budget and tax rate, while Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack was not present for the meeting.

“I think we’ve gotten some good things out of [the budget], the positions for law enforcement and the medical examiner’s office, but I am still opposed,” Gray said.

Why it matters

The approved tax rate was $0.3790 per $100 of home valuation, which Tax Assessor-Collector Tammy McRae said was an 8.91% increase from the FY 2023-24 budget. According to county budget documents, this is also the first tax increase for the county in five years.
