During its Dec. 14 meeting, Conroe City Council approved as part of its consent agenda—on which items are approved with one motion without discussion—the arts and cultural grant awards amounts for various local organizations.

Sherry Morgan, the director for Conroe’s Convention and Visitors Bureau, presented the recommended grant awards to council during its Dec. 13 workshop meeting.

The big picture

Fifteen organizations will receive a portion of the $210,000 the city allocated towards the arts and cultural grants, according to the Dec. 13 workshop meeting agenda packet. Those include:

  • Christian Youth Theater: $15,000
  • Conroe Art League: $15,000
  • Conroe Symphony Orchestra: $15,000
  • Crighton Theater Foundation: $15,000
  • Friends of the Flag Foundation: $15,000
  • Greater Conroe Arts Alliance: $15,000
  • Heritage Museum of Montgomery County: $15,000
  • Main Stage Productions: $15,000
  • Montgomery County Choral Society: $15,000
  • Montgomery County Genealogical and Historical Society: $9,000
  • Montgomery County Literary Arts Council: $8,500
  • Player’s Theatre Company: $15,000
  • The Daybreak Chorus: $12,500
  • The Jazz Connection: $15,000
  • Young Texas Artists: $15,000

This is the first year the arts and cultural grants are coming out of the hotel occupancy tax fund instead of the general fund, a change the city made during budget season in August, Community Impact previously reported.

Quote of note

“Sherry, I appreciate all your hard work on this and I certainly know that all the arts and cultural [organizations] appreciate what you’ve done,” Place 5 council member Marsha Porter said during the Dec. 13 workshop meeting. “They need this money for advertisement and everything so thank you very much.”
