The hiking branch of the Sam Houston Trails Coalition is asking for new and gently worn shoes to raise money to repair two bridges.

The shoes will be collected and donated to Shoes with Heart, an organization that pays by the pound and sends shoes to entrepreneurs in third world countries.

Funds raised will be used to assist meeting financial requirements for a Texas Parks and Wildlife Grant to repair two bridges on Lone Star Hiking Trail, said Jane Prentis, a volunteer with the coalition. The Lone Star Hiking Trail bridge crosses the east fork of the San Jacinto River, while the bridge over the West Fork of the San Jacinto River is adjacent to Stubblefield Campground.

According to the coalition, the east fork bridge has been swept away by large rain events, and the other is in major need of repairs. Prentis said she is hoping to collect 2,500 pairs of shoes.
