All Harris County voting centers are now reporting results from the March 5 primary elections. Michelle Gwinn won the Democratic primary for Texas Senate District 7 with 55.39% of votes against her opponent Nasir H. Malik, who earned 44.61% of votes. The county reported 21,802 ballots were cast in this race.

In an emailed statement to Community Impact, Gwinn thanked her supporters.

"The journey continues in November, and I am counting on working with everyone to be your next State Senator," she said. "I would also like to thank my opponent Mr. Nasir Malik for running and participating in this election process. He is a man who is beloved by many in his community, and I wish him well."

As of 3:20 a.m., about 87% of voting centers in Harris County were reporting election results. In the Democratic primary for Texas Senate District 7, Michelle Gwinn continued leading with 10,456 votes, or 54.68%, in her favor. Nasir H. Malik followed with 8,665 votes, or 45.32%.

It appears Gwinn will be on the ballot again this November against the incumbent state Sen. Paul Betterncourt, R-Houston, who has held the seat since 2015.

As of 10:30 p.m. on March 5, 46 of 545 voting centers were reporting results in Harris County. Michelle Gwinn maintained the lead with 54.34% of the votes over Nasir H. Malik, who earned 45.66% of votes.

Based on early voting and mail-in ballot results reported by Harris County and Montgomery County, Michelle Gwinn is in the lead for the Texas Senate District 7 Democratic primary.

A closer look

Two Democrats were on the ballot in this Democratic primary.
  • Michelle Gwinn received 6,743, or 54.49% of the votes prior to election day. According to her campaign website, she is a mediator and volunteer deputy registrar.
  • Nasir H. Malik, a custom residential and commercial builder, received 5,632, or 45.51% of the votes prior to election day.
With a population of about 954,000, Senate District 7 covers 19% of Harris County and 11% of Montgomery County, according to the Texas Legislative Council. It includes portions of Conroe, Cy-Fair, Houston, Katy, Klein, Magnolia, Montgomery, Spring Branch, Spring, Tomball and Waller ISDs.

The winner of the Democratic primary will be on the ballot in the November general election, facing incumbent state Sen. Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
