Why are you running for this position?

I’ve felt a drive to advocate for those left out of our political process throughout my life. Our state deserves an advocate fighting for them. That’s why I ran 10 years ago for Justice of the Peace, and why I feel compelled to run for Texas State Senate now.

What are the biggest challenges facing the district, and how would you address them if elected?

The biggest challenges facing Senate District 7 include protecting and investing in our public schools, getting the government from getting between you and your doctors by giving women a right to choose, and expanding our health care system so that folks receive the life-saving care they need.

What changes would you like to see made to the state's school finance system, if any?

We need our state to increase funding for our public schools so that we can pay teachers a livable wage that doesn’t require them to pay out-of-pocket for class supplies. We also need to invest in school counseling, and special education support, as well as early childhood education.

How would you ensure your constituents have access to the health care services they need?

Texas is the least insured state in the country. Our state should expand Medicaid so that folks who can’t afford treatment can get the lifesaving health care they need. Our state should be investing in public hospitals and clinics to ensure everyone has access to care regardless of income.

How would you build productive relationships across districts and party lines?

As a prior Republican and current Democrat, I understand the nuance of social issues our district and state are facing. I believe in building bridges across party lines by finding common ground on the needs of our community, and creating opportunities for healthy discussion and input from diverse backgrounds.
