Byron Sanford has won the race for Montgomery mayor, and Casey L. Olson and Cheryl Fox won races for City Council places 2 and 4, respectively.

Sanford, who was previously on City Council Place 5, beat fellow Council Member Julie Davis for mayor, earning 183 votes, or 55.45% of votes, according to unofficial results.

“I’m humbled and very pleased with what the voters have done and we’ll go in and do our very best,” Sanford said in a phone interview May 9.


Olson beat incumbent Kevin Lacy for Place 2 with 157 votes, or 51.99% of votes. Olson previously said his top priorities as a council member are infrastructure, maintenance of current infrastructure, development of downtown Montgomery and bringing people to downtown.

With 179 votes, or 56.11% of votes, Fox won the Place 4 race. A resident of Montgomery for 45 years, Fox previously said she wants the leaders of Montgomery to honor the city's history and understand their decisions will impact the future.

Sanford, Olson and Fox could not be reached for comment on election night.

All results are unofficial until canvassed.

With early and absentee votes counted and 14 precincts reporting election day results out of 52 in Montgomery County, results show Byron Sanford leads the city of Montgomery mayoral race with 153 votes, or 59.07% of votes, against Julie Davis, who has received 106 votes.

Davis previously served in Montgomery City Council Place 4, and Sanford, a public school administrator for six years and a pastor, has served on the Montgomery Economic Development Corp. and as a Houston-Galveston Area Council representative, according to previous reporting. Sanford also served in Montgomery City Council Place 5.

In the race for Montgomery City Council Place 2, Casey L. Olson leads with 132 votes, or 55.93% of the vote, against incumbent Kevin Lacy with 104 votes, according to results from Montgomery County.


Lacy has previously served on City Council, and Olson has worked eight years as an independent contractor and 12 years in Gulf of Mexico oil and gas operations, according to previous reporting.

In addition, Cheryl Fox leads the race for Place 4 with 143 votes, or 57.89% of the vote, against Juanita Simmons with 104 votes.

Fox is a small business owner and served on Montgomery’s Economic Development Corp., according to previous reporting. Simmons has 40 years leadership experience in public and private oil companies.
