On April 30, Montgomery ISD students pulled down a dark blue sheet to unveil a new county historical marker in front of Montgomery Elementary School. The marker commemorated 100 years of the district’s history.

Looking back

What is now 9,000 students and 11 different schools started out as one school building when the district was founded in 1925, Community Impact previously reported. Throughout the past century, the district hit historical milestones such as school integration and winning state championship titles.

MISD also endured tribulations, including a fire that burnt down the main building at Montgomery High School in 1984, according to district documents.

Former student Junior Mock was at the ceremony on April 30. In an interview, he recounted his many memories with MISD and talked about how the schools have changed now that his granddaughter attends MES.

“Where the car rider line is, [that] was our football field,” Mock said about the current MES.

Mock said he remembered when the football players used to chase cows off of the field before practice, as well as the fire at Montgomery High School. However, Mock and other former graduates at the ceremony said the one thing that hasn’t changed over the years is the good-quality education provided by MISD.

In their own words
  • “We're not just commemorating the passage of time. We're honoring the generations of students, teachers, staff members, community leaders, everyone who has left their mark on this incredible district and town,” MISD board President Matt Fuller said.
  • “A lot of times as growth happens, things grow apart. I'm proud to say that that doesn't exist here. With our city, with our town, with our folks here, we grow together as we grow,” MISD Superintendent Mark Ruffin said at the ceremony.
