The Lone Star College Foundation is partnering with cable and internet provider Comcast to ensure LSC students at the Kingwood and Montgomery campuses have access to classroom technology.

The details

According to a Feb. 10 news release, the $100,000 collaboration includes the donation of 100 laptops to support income-constrained LSC-Kingwood students pursuing a technology-related certificate or degree.

Additionally, Comcast donated $50,000 to LSC-Montgomery to help fund the creation of “Maverick Minds,” a student-led podcast that will provide updates on campus resources and student life.

“Lone Star College Foundation is excited to work with Comcast to help Lone Star College students receive the equipment and education needed to compete in an increasingly technology and digital-savvy world,” LSCF Executive Director Nicole Robinson Gauthier said in a statement.

A closer look

According to the news release, the partnership is coming as Comcast expands its Xfinity network into Montgomery and Kingwood. Officials noted the expansion is bringing access to a variety of services, including:
  • High-speed internet
  • Cable television
  • Phone services
Destiny Spearman, a LSC student who received a laptop through the partnership, said the donation has helped her excel in the classroom.

“Receiving a laptop from Comcast has provided me the resources I need for my design classes,” Spearman said in a statement. “The new computer allowed me to download the software I needed to make my academic career easier.”

For students interested in joining “Maverick Minds,” officials said the podcast will have a dedicated room in LSC-Montgomery’s marketing suite and in the library.

The LSCF has awarded more than $26 million in scholarships to more than 27,000 students since 1991. Additionally, the foundation has raised nearly $13 million to support student programming.
