On Feb. 6, the Lone Star College System’s board of trustees approved the purchase of a comprehensive mental health counseling service program as part of its consent agenda. The consent agenda is made up of multiple items voted on by trustees in one motion.

Long story short

According to the board agenda, the mental health counseling service would be a program conducted for a three-year period with Communities in Schools of Houston for a total cost of $9.5 million from the 2025 budget.

Communities in Schools of Houston is an organization that helps students through a community of support and with a goal of keeping students in school to achieve. CIS currently has a program at 12 LSCS campuses including in Tomball and Conroe.

Why it matters

LSCS requests licensed professional mental health counselors and other qualified personnel capable of “delivering emotional, psychological, and/or behavioral support during a crisis or difficult time for its student body," according to the Feb. 6 meeting agenda. Trustees did not discuss the item further during the meeting.
