Conroe ISD trustees approved reinstating the 2023 bylaws of the district’s School Health Advisory Council as well as reinstating previous members at the Nov. 19 meeting.

The setup

The SHAC was created to assist the district in ensuring that local community values and health issues are reflected in the district’s health and physical education instruction, according to information on the district website.

“We as a board are not bound by these suggestions or advice and we aren’t compelled or bound to accept anything they present as marching orders or directives to us,” board President Misty Odenweller said at the meeting.

In a unanimous vote, the board approved the 2024-25 SHAC member count to increase from 21 members to 47 as well accepting all of those who applied to the council through the procedures in place since May.

The previous board of trustees approved adoption of new bylaws and reduced the number of members serving on the SHAC in a 4-3 vote during the May 14 board meeting, as previously reported by Community Impact. The four members voting in favor of that measure were replaced by a new slate of trustees in the Nov. 5 election, and they were sworn in Nov. 18.

What’s next

At the January of the SHAC meeting, the council will follow the 2023 bylaws and all members are to attend, Odenweller said.
