Montgomery ISD officials are anticipating a January 2024 start date for a new superintendent as the district kicks off its superintendent search process, the board of trustees said in an Aug. 16 letter to MISD families.

The board selected the consulting firm Thompson & Horton LLP to lead the superintendent search process during a July 18 meeting and released a superintendent hiring timeline following a special meeting Aug. 15.

What you need to know

According to the hiring timeline established by Thompson and Horton, the district is hoping to identify a candidate who would begin serving as superintendent in January, although the timeline is subject to change. The superintendent application period is expected to close in October, according to the hiring timeline.
  • August: The superintendent position is advertised.
  • October: Community input is collected via focus group meetings and an online survey.
  • November: Select candidates are interviewed, and district visits are conducted.
  • December: A finalist is identified, and the candidate visits the district. An employee contract is approved.
  • January: The candidate assumes the superintendent position.
How we got here

MISD is looking to hire a new superintendent following the resignation of Heath Morrison in July, who served as superintendent since July 2020.
  • Morrison's last day with the district was July 31. He resigned from MISD to serve as CEO of Teachers of Tomorrow, a national organization, effective Aug. 1.
  • The board appointed Amy Busby, assistant superintendent of student services and innovation, as interim superintendent, effective Aug. 1, during a July 18 special meeting.
  • The board last conducted a superintendent search in 2020.
