Conroe ISD Board of Trustees gathered on Tuesday evening for the regularly scheduled meeting to discuss and take action on various agenda items, including naming the new principal of Snyder Elementary School and recognizing the 2018 Texas Music Educators Association All-State musicians. 1. Board recognized the 2018 TMEA All-state students CISD recognized 32 orchestra, band and choir students during Tuesday’s board meeting for being named the 2018 TMEA All-State musicians. The musicians competed against more than 72,000 high school students from around state for a chance to perform in one of 15 ensembles. Coordinator of Fine Arts Robert Horton said the district understands the importance of fine arts and is committed to the program. “Some of you may choose to become musicians and pursue music as a career—and your parents may get mad at me for saying this, but that is a perfectly acceptable career path,” Horton said while addressing the room. “The world needs musicians just as it needs engineers and doctors and lawyers and whatever else you choose to do.” 2. New principal of Snyder Elementary School named Crystal Poncho, who currently serves as assistant principal at Snyder Elementary, was unanimously approved to be the school’s new principal. Snyder Elementary’s current principal, Lindsay Ardoin, it set to be the new principal of Clark Intermediate School in the fall, Director of Communications Sarah Blakelock said. Snyder Elementary, a pre-kindergarten thru fourth grade campus, opened in 2013 and has more than 1,000 students enrolled, according to the campus’ website. When addressing the board, Poncho said she was honored to continue serving the Snyder Elementary community. “I will continue to build on the strong foundation of Snyder Elementary by always putting students first, building positive relationships with students, staff and the community, and continuing the great work of Dr. Ann K. Snyder [the school’s namesake] through philanthropy,” Poncho said. 3. Updates received on Flex 19, and construction of two campuses debuting in August Construction on two new CISD schools, Grand Oaks High School and Katherine Johnson Clark Intermediate School, continues as the district prepares for their August debut. Easy Foster, director of planning and construction said the construction timeline on the new schools is on schedule. Grand Oaks will be a ninth- and 10th-grade campus when it opens and will add new grade levels every year until it is at capacity in 2020; Katherine Johnson Clark Intermediate is a fifth- and sixth-grade campus. Foster also provided information on the new K-6 campus, or Flex 19, set to premiere in the Oak Ridge feeder zone in August 2019. Flex 19 is funded as part of the district’s $487 million bond package approved in 2015. Based on the construction proposal from Marshall Construction Company, the guaranteed maximum cost for the project will be $24.98 million, Foster said.
