Conroe officials held a groundbreaking ceremony for the Oscar Johnson Jr. Community Center that was approved for construction in 2021.

Current situation

The groundbreaking event took place July 13. The ceremony included remarks from Rob Hamilton, who retired from Conroe’s Park and Recreation department in February 2022; Mayor Jody Czjkoski; Ruby Johnson, the wife of the late Oscar Johnson Jr.; President of Burditt Land Charles Burditt; and President of Brookstone Construction Jeremy Stovall.

How we got here

According to previous reporting, the project first appeared in a 2014 feasibility study. The study showed from fiscal year 2008-09 to FY 2013-14, the center saw visitors increase 185% to 104,703 guests annually. As a result, the city will build the center on a near Foster Drive on land purchased by the city.

$35 million in funding was approved in December 2021 for the new center, according to previous reporting.

The new center is expected to span 87,000 square feet with a fitness center, child care areas and event space for 300 people, according to previous reporting.
