U.S. Rep. Kevin Brady aims to propose comprehensive tax reform legislation by the end of 2017. Brady delivered a legislative update to the local community at the April Sound Country Club on Tuesday morning, speaking about topics like revamping the U.S. tax code and the division between Republicans and Democrats on repealing the Affordable Care Act.

Here is what you missed from Brady’s legislative update:

Tax reform initiatives

On Tuesday, Brady said he plans to propose tax reform legislation to encourage economic growth in the nation. He said the current tax code has pushed companies overseas, and that it needs to be simplified by cutting special provisions to make taxes more manageable for employers.

"[Tax reform is the] biggest legislative challenge of every generation," Brady said. “No one defends the current tax code. [Americans] are seeing the same companies I am seeing leaving America, they are seeing the same manufacturing jobs leave the U.S. like I am..

Brady said he will suggest cutting special provisions and international taxation to encourage large companies to bring their international investments back to the U.S.. He said a final draft of a tax reform bill will be introduced in the fall, and hopes the bill to be in the Senate by October and on President Donald Trump’s desk for signature by the end of 2017.

A health care bill for Republicans and Democrats

In late July, a bill intending to repeal portions of the ACA was rejected in the Senate with a 49-51 vote, with three Republican senators voting against it. A complete repeal of the ACA is not possible, Brady said, unless the Senate can come together on health care.

“[We want to create a bill] that first helps lower the premiums and costs for those trapped in Obamacare,” Brady said. “Secondly, [writing a bill] that starts the transition to getting far more affordable and far more patient-centered healthcare than Obamacare offers today.”

Brady heads to historic Reagan Ranch

Brady will be in Santa Barbara, Cali. on Wednesday morning to speak on the future of tax reform in a publicly televised legislative update. The legislative update takes place at Reagan Ranch, a location chosen because it is where former president Ronald Reagan signed the Tax Reform Act of 1986 on Aug. 16, Brady said.

On the same day 31 years later, Brady plans to talk about challenges in tax reform and how to change it. The speech can be viewed via Facebook Live at 4:30 p.m. CT at www.facebook.com/kevinbrady
