As mayor pro tem, Coon will assume mayoral duties if Powell is absent or otherwise unable to fulfill the mayoral responsibilities. Coon replaces Place 4 councilman Guy Martin, who held the mayor pro tem title since 2011 under former mayor Webb Melder. Powell said he selected Coon because of his previous experience as a city council member. “Every one of my councilmembers are great and are very qualified, so it was a difficult decision,” Powell said. “Duke is a good man. He has served on council before and has his feet on the ground. Duke and I will hopefully make a lot of good progress together.” Coon has served as the city’s Place 3 councilman since 2014, and previously served on city council between 2002 and 2006.
