Charles Coleman began brewing beer with his mother in 1998 as a way to bond when his father passed away. Twenty-two years later, he decided to quit his day job and pursue the brewing industry with his wife, Michelle.

Frankenboltzzzz Brewing Co. opened in March 2020. The brewery is set up in a garage-style setting with darts, board games and music.

The brewery specializes in English styles—such as barleywine—stouts and porters. Charles said he also experiments with German styles and some India Pale Ales. Michelle said the business was originally going to be named Boltzzzz Brewing; however, they couldn’t trademark it. The couple said they met 32 years ago at a production of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and both loved “Young Frankenstein”, so they pieced the name together.

“It’s a lot of fun for me; you never know what you’re going to get from us,” Charles said.

As the brewery started during the COVID-19 pandemic, Charles said getting licensing—typically a very long process—became very easy. He said the toughest part about running a brewery is keeping up with the industry.

In addition, he said keeping up with beer production has been difficult as Frankenboltzzzz Brewing Co. gains recognition in Montgomery. Michelle said they have received customers from Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia and South Africa.

“We had a German gentleman in here that said drinking our hefeweizen was like being home; it was amazing,” Michelle said.

Michelle said due to the growing customer demand, Charles works about 100 hours a week, and without a formal business degree, the couple is having to learn how to run a business as they go. However, Michelle and Charles said the best part about running the business is the Montgomery community.

“They come in; they are like us; we have a good time,” Charles said. “It’s a safe space; bring your kids; bring your family. ... You don’t have to worry about people getting rowdy; we shut that down real quick. It’s not just about beer; it’s about family.”

Types of beer offered

The brewery focuses on different styles of beer:
