Sugar Land will be home to another dine-in cinema in 2017, when Round Rock-based Flix Brewhouse plans to open a location near the intersection of Hwys. 6 and 90. The movie theater chain emphasizes its microbrewed craft beer and upscale atmosphere. Flix Brewhouse has three locations in Texas, Iowa and Indiana, and is looking to expand around Houston. Matt Silvers, senior vice president real estate and brand development, said. The company settled on Sugar Land because of the city’s growth and demographics of younger, affluent residents. The 38,000-square-foot building will have 950 to 1,000 seats and eight movie screens. At least 400 parking spaces will be available for the theater, which Silvers said would be in the Promenade at Telfair, a shopping center planned for the Crossing at Telfair mixed-used commercial development. Rubicon Realty Group in Missouri City is developing the project. “Flix would be the entertainment center of that location,” he said. Silvers said Flix plans to break ground on the $10 million-plus project this spring. The theater will feature first-run studio films as well as independent movies and classic films. Flix will also hold special events and will enforce an age-restriction policy in the evenings, due to its beer offerings. The company brews 12 varieties of craft beer—six of which are seasonal— and every theater has its own dedicated local brewer to make unique batches, Silvers said. Flix Brewhouse is the third dine-in movie theater set to hit the area, the others being the existing Star Cinema Grill in Missouri City and the future location of Alamo Drafthouse, which is planned to open at Sugar Land’s Imperial Market mixed-use development in summer 2017. Silvers said theater companies are experimenting more with the dine-in model. “[The dine-in theater] experience is much more enjoyable for customers,” Silvers said. “Each dine-in cinema has its own twist. Ours is craft beer and premium food.”
