A Sterling McCall Acura of Sugar Land car dealership will open its doors in the summer of 2017.
Sugar Land City Council unanimously approved a development plan June 21 for Group 1 Automotive to construct an Acura dealership at Hwy. 59 and Addison Avenue.
Construction will begin in late August or early September, said Marvin Marcell, director of public affairs for Group 1. The dealership is expected to open in July or August of 2017 with a 13,406-square-foot showroom and a 19,934-square-foot service area, he said. The dealership will have new and used Acuras.
“We’ll be a little smaller than the others but we’re just getting started,” he said.
Marcell described the dealership as having a “boutique” feel with a smaller inventory compared to other car dealerships.
Sterling McCall Acura of Sugar Land will have a total of 302 parking spaces, according to the development plan. That number includes spaces for the showroom, service area, customers, employees and inventory.
“It’s a very small footprint,” Marcell said. He said the dealership has storage nearby that will hold additional vehicle inventory.
Prior to the approval, Group 1 revised the design of the project after public feedback suggested the dealership’s architectural features did not match the Telfair community’s aesthetics. Jim Shaw spoke at a public hearing on the project in March expressing concerns about the aesthetics as well as the flow of car carrier traffic into the dealership.
Sugar Land Planning and Zoning Commission Chairwoman Kathy Huebner also voted against the proposal in April citing a need for a higher standard for distinctive design features and building finishes.
“It really is a beautiful facility,” city council member Amy Mitchell said at a June 7 meeting. “I’m very excited to have a Group 1 Auto dealership here in town, especially an Acura dealership, so thank you so much for working so hard to meet everybody’s requests.”
